Rhythmic tapping to a moving beat motion kinematics overrules natural gravity

چکیده

Beat induction is the cognitive ability that allows humans to listen a regular pulse in music and move synchrony with it. Although auditory rhythmic cues induce more consistent synchronization than flashing visual metronomes, this auditory-visual asymmetry can be canceled by moving stimuli. Here, we investigated whether naturalness of motion or its kinematics could provide advantage over metronomes. Subjects were asked tap sync metronomes defined vertically accelerating/decelerating motion, either congruent not natural gravity; horizontally motion; We found was predominant factor determining rhythm synchronization, as accelerating any cardinal direction produced precise predictive tapping decelerating conditions. Our results support notion convey strong sense beat, seen cueing movements an orchestra director.

Rhythmic motor entrainment in children with speech and language impairments: tapping to the beat.

In prior work (Corriveau et al., 2007), we showed that children with speech and language impairments (SLI) were significantly less sensitive than controls to two auditory cues to rhythmic timing, amplitude envelope rise time and duration. Here we explore whether rhythmic problems extend to rhythmic motor entrainment. Tapping in synchrony with a beat has been described as the simplest rhythmic a...

Pinpointing the Beat: Tapping to Expressive Performances

In this study we report on an experiment in which listeners were asked to tap in time with expressively performed music, and compare the results to two other experiments using the same stimuli which investigated beat and tempo perception through other modalities. Many computational models of beat tracking assume that beats correspond with the onset of musical notes; we consider the hypothesis t...

Influences of metrical structure and grouping on the kinematics of rhythmic finger tapping

We investigated whether metrical accentuation has obligatory effects on the kinematics of rhythmic finger tapping. Auditory rhythmic patterns were repeated cyclically, and participants first synchronized with each pattern and then reproduced it 10 times on a MIDI keyboard, which yielded measures of the timing and velocities of key depression and release. Experiment 1 used strongly and weakly me...

Rhythmic synchronization tapping to an audio–visual metronome in budgerigars

In all ages and countries, music and dance have constituted a central part in human culture and communication. Recently, vocal-learning animals such as parrots and elephants have been found to share rhythmic ability with humans. Thus, we investigated the rhythmic synchronization of budgerigars, a vocal-mimicking parrot species, under controlled conditions and a systematically designed experimen...

Redefining Gravity and Newtonian Natural Motion

Traditional Newtonian mechanics treats gravity as one of the forces contributing to the acceleration of a body in motion. Newtonian natural motion is defined relative to an abstract inertial space where gravity is non-existent and free body velocity motion remains constant unless modified by applied force. With this interpretation, gravitational force is an embedded characteristic whose effect ...
